Meet the expedition team members

Rick Schindelka

Rick is a 50 year old recovering workaholic. he is married with children and owns a very successful fish and chips restaurant in Langley, BC.

This is Rick's first bicycle expedition. He has been training for this trip, mostly in the gym on a pretend, make believe bike so he hopes to be able to keep up to the more fit members of the group.

Rick is a late addition to the team. He joined to replace Greg's son, Alex who was forced to quit because of work commitments. He is a welcome addition to the team as his wife is an awesome hostess who rarely allows your glass to get empty. Welcome to the team Janice!

Scott Krishan

Scott is a 43 year old married, father of one very lovely little girl. Scott recently quit smoking so this trip is all part of a positive life style change for him.

He enjoys spending time with his family which includes his visually impaired dog. He likes to go camping in his partially restored Boler trailer. He hopes to one day have the trailer completed.

This is Scott’s first bicycle adventure. In fact this is Scott’s first well deserved vacation for a long time. He has been training on his new bike and looks forward to being the leader of the pack.

Barry Byer

Barry is 45 years old, married 17 years with two kids aged 6 (boy) and 9 (girl).

Barry works for WestJet and has been there almost 11 years. Hobbies are cars and golf and is planning on not being drank under the table by anyone, especially Kerry!

This is Barry's first bike trip and he is very excited to be going!

Shawn Darcy

Shawn Darcy is 45 yrs old originally from "The Rock" and has been living in Calgary for the past 23 yrs.

Shawn is a rugby and golf enthusiast. He is a divorced father of two beautiful kids; Logan is 8 and Max is 7.

Shawn has worked for WestJet for the past 8 yrs and loves it there!

This Shawn's 1st ever bike trip. He claims to be full of nervous energy and is looking forward to the experience and the cervasas!!

Jordan Vanderzalm

At 26, Jordan is the youngest member of the expedition team. He has been married for a couple of years and is hoping to buy a home and start a family very soon. He is Kerry's oldest of three sons.

Jordan is a graduate of the Emily Carr University of Art & Design and is now a professional animator. He makes animated movies and is currently working on the Thomas the Tank Engine series.

This will be Jordan's longest bicycle expedition to date.
Jordan will be attempting this adventure on a thirty something year old ten speed bicycle. Having visited Belize a few time previous to this trip Jordan is really excited about arriving on his antique bicycle this time. This will be Jordan's fourth visit to Belize.

Roger Hallingham

Roger just turned 50 and is on his second ride down the coast to Belize.
His day job has him gainfully employed at WestJet airlines fixing jets.
On his days off, Roger is either renovating the house or slowly finishing a 1932 Ford roadster that he has been working on for the past 8 years.
He has been with Sherry for the past 2 years and they enjoy vacationing in the Carribean and summer camping expeditions in a Boler trailer.

Greg Shannon

I’ll be turning 49 shortly after our trip. Born and raised in Surrey I now call White Rock home. I have 2 grown children Alex (22) and Paige (19). Alex is apprenticing as a “tin basher” and Paige is at UFV (University of the Fraser Valley) studying volleyball and education. In addition to cycling I’m a reasonably competent sailor, good cook, fair bartender and have recently discovered the joys of downhill mountain biking (the chair lifts take you up and you coast downhill at great speed, not exactly training for this ride). Like Scott and Roger, I’m also a Boler trailer enthusiast and have travelled a bit in an almost restored 1973 13 foot. Always on the prowl for a good bar with a great band, I’m looking forward to Kerry and Roger guiding me through San Pedro’s best watering holes.

As gainful employment I work for Shippers Supply Inc in Delta, where I’m the branch manager. We are a manufacturer and distributor of packaging, storage, logistics and warehouse solutions. As a second career I’m looking forward to being a sailing bum at which time I’ll sail to Kerry and Candace’s house in Belize and drop anchor in their backyard.

This is my first trip to Belize and my first cycling trip of any great distance.

Kerry Vanderzalm

Kerry Vanderzalm is 49 years old and has been married for 30 years. He has three adult sons (one of which is on this expedition).
Kerry enjoys the tropics, traveling, bike riding, boating, SCUBA diving, good food, good booze, good friends and open air bars. He is a self described parrot head.
Kerry is a partner in Art Knapp Plantland nursery and garden center in Surrey, BC
This is Kerry's 4th adventure bike expedition. He has done this same ride from Cancun to Belize with Roger before and this past summer rode with his brother from Surrey, BC to San Francisco, California in nine and a half days. Ouch!
Kerry plans include buying a house in San Pedro, Belize and to eventually retire and live there for a good portion of the year (at least the winter months) doing all of the things that go with living in the tropics and perhaps get a part time job in a local open air bar on the beach serving drinks to like minded people and maybe one day even owning his own bar on the beach.
